Want to include foods to your weight loss program that will help you slim down and are considered super foods? What is a super food? Well it is so high in nutritional value that it can combat the signs of aging and help to defend from many diseases. Here is our list of 10 superfoods that will help you lose weight and stay healthy. Apples: An apple a day keeps the doctor away and will help you lose weight. The fibre that is high in apples (and other fruits) will help you to feel full longer, so therefore help you to have less cravings. For a healthy apple snack, saute a sliced apple in coconut oil. Add these to some plain yogurt with crushed roasted nuts. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, swiss chard. These powerful little leafs are high in antioxidants, vitamin A, K and C. At the end of cooking a stir-fry or fresh whole wheat pasta, toss in a handful of fresh leafy greens and let them steam for a minute or two. Walnuts: Nuts are high in healthy fats (which have been shown to actually increase weight loss), protein (an important nutrient to help you stay full), and fiber to help you digest your foods properly. Oats or better yet, kamut flakes: Oats have a special kind of fiber that has been show to help to lower cholesterol. Start each morning with a warm bowl of oatmeal or kamut flakes topped with plain organic yogurt and sweetened with pure unpasteurized honey. Berries: Blueberries are perhaps one of the mightiest of superfoods. Most everyone loves them, and they are easy to munch on for a sweet yet healthy dessert. Garlic: Sure, your Mom can always smell it when you had garlic for dinner, but embrace this smell! It is used as a medicine to fight infections, lower cholesterol and more. Add it raw to a nice fresh dip like hummus, for full nutritional benefit. Tomatoes: very low in calories, source of vitamin A, C and antioxidants. Use cooked and raw. Try scooping out the centers and filling with chopped nuts, whole grain quinoa and some feta cheese, baked for 15 minutes at 350F. Salmon: the super fish, heavy in omega 3 fatty acids, protein and calcium, Vitamin D and B. Grilled, baked or sautéed, serve over a bed of brown rice with a squeeze of lemon juice. Green tea: and yes, even coffee are both metabolism boosters, which means that they help you to burn more calories even when you are not exercising. For the best green tea, boil water, and let it cool down for about 15 seconds before pouring over tea. Let steep for 3 minutes and remove tea for the best flavor. Broccoli: high in fiber, folate vitamins A and C, low in calories. Saute garlic in a little olive oil, toss in the broccoli pieces and splash of white wine. Cover and let steam for 4-5 minutes. Serve hot with a grating of parmesan cheese for real crowd pleaser. Grandmother's Kitchen Nutritionist, Heidi Rasmussen, BScN |
