These red velvet donuts are baked and topped with a delicious simple glaze.

Ingredients

Tools: (1) 12 hole donut pan

2 1/4 cups flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
1 extra large egg
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate, chips or grated
1/2 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 Tablespoon red food coloring

Icing

2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar

Topping

1/2 a crumbled donut

Directions

Donut

Preheat your oven to 350F.

Grease a donut pan with butter.

Using your favorite melting method (ie. double boiler or microwave), melt the chocolate.

Once melted, add the butter and stir in. Turn off heat but leave the mixture on the stove so it stays melted.

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder and salt in a large bowl; set aside.

In a new large bowl mix together the sugar and egg.

Add the melted butter and chocolate, vanilla extract and buttermilk; mix well to thoroughly combine.

Gradually add the dry ingredients in the first bowl to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.

Carefully fill prepared donut pan with the batter, fill each 2/3 full so there is room to rise.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until slightly springy to touch.

Let cool on a wire rack.

Icing

In a small bowl, use a whisk or fork to combine all icing ingredients until smooth.

Assembly

Make sure donuts are fully cooled and then place them onto serving tray.

Use tongs (or clean hands) and dip the tops of the donuts into the glaze.

Optional: Break up 1 donuts into crumbs and sprinkle over glaze.

Let cool in fridge before serving so that the glaze can harden slightly.
